One year ago, our lives drastically changed when we heard for the first time the words Chiari Malformation. Our youngest daughter, Ashlyn, was 19 months old and she went in for a MRI due to some developmental delays and favoring of one side of her body. We were thinking that MAYBE she had a stroke or brain hemorrhage when she was born, but we were shocked to find out differently.
I will always remember the moment I received the phone call from the doctor with the devastating news about Ashlyn. I was at work and I ran to the office so I could hear the nurse as she spoke. Tears rolled down my face as I didn't know exactly what the words Chiari Malformation meant other than my daughter had a malformation in her brain and she was being referred to a neurologist and a neurosurgeon. I remember trying to take notes with my shaky hand as the nurse spelled out Chiari Malformation. I also spelled out INCURABLE. I remember trying to phone my husband and explain between sobs the results of Ashlyn's MRI. I remember calling our families with the devastating news. I remember coming home to see tears streaming down my husband's face.
Since this day, we have spent many hours at doctor's offices, at various appointments, at more MRI's, physical therapy sessions, occupational therapy sessions, and of course brain surgery. We have spent many hours in prayer. We have spent many hours crying. We have spent countless hours rejoicing.
Ashlyn continues to be our little miracle as she fights this incurable brain malformation. She is doing AMAZING and no one would ever be able to guess that she had brain surgery. She continues to grow and develop and amaze us with her contagious laughter and personality.
To follow more of Ashlyn's journey with Chiari Malformation, please read my other blog Chiari Hope.

Tea Please?
Since I have been sick so much this season, I've been drinking a lot of hot tea, just to help warm my bones.
The other morning, Mariah was so thoughtful and made me a cup of tea before I woke up in the morning. She wanted to keep it warm so she put it in the dishwasher. Interested idea, but thoughtful. :) I thanked her for her generosity and told her I was going to warm it in the microwave in a little while.
At 8:00 I warmed my tea in the microwave.
At 1:00pm, I looked at the microwave and it said "END" and I thought to myself, "what is in the microwave?"
My cold tea.
Mom brain. Mom daily craziness.

Toilet Training in Less than a Day
Less than a day?? This can't be true! I was the first skeptic. I was leery. I was pessimistic but trying to by optimistic. I was actually nervous to try it.
Again, I was nervous for some reason. It was a bitter sweet moment of our last child in diapers getting ready to become a "big girl." I followed the method for the most part but Ashlyn pretty much took her own initiative and I only followed the method for the basic ideas and followed Ashlyn's lead.
By mid morning, Ashlyn was telling ME when she needed to go potty. She stayed dry! She hasn't worn a diaper since potty training day. She had a couple "half" accidents on training day where she started to pee and stopped right away and ran to the potty. I still call that success since she knew what was happening. The first night, I asked Ashlyn if she wanted to wear a diaper to bed and she said, "um, probably not." (Too cute!) She stayed dry for her 2.5 hour nap on potty training day and stayed dry during the night (9:00pm to 9:00am!!) I was actually shocked!!
So, what IS the method?? How can a child learn to potty train in less than four hours and be willing to use the potty without assistance or a reminder??
In short, you reserve ONE day for training and limit all distractions. There is a lot of repetition, positive reinforcement and no punishments or negative reinforcement. The book suggests this method for children 20 months of age to 4 years old. You start with a baby doll that wets to demonstrate and follow the same method with the doll as with the child. You use a lot of reminders and checking dry/wet pants. The child pulls their own pants up and down, helps empty potty chair, and helps to clean any messes.
Ashlyn didn't wear pants on training day, just underwear, so it was easy for her to pull them up and down. We had a lot of different drinks on hand (since training only lasts a few hours, you need the child to have to go potty a lot during that time) and fun cups with straws to drink out of (anything to make the experience a little more fun). Ashlyn enjoyed her potty chair, whereas Ambria liked the big potty better. We used high fives, praise, cheering, stickers, small pieces of candy, and band aids (yes, band aids, Ashlyn's favorite) as positive reinforcement. After a few hours, Ashlyn did not expect, or even ask for, candy.
Going pee was VERY easy of a process for Ashlyn, but I was nervous about the poo. I knew Ashlyn had to go, but I could tell she was a little scared. She told me she had to go poop and kept running to her potty chair to sit down but she did not go. This lasted for HOURS. I sat on the floor in the bathroom to help distract Ashlyn and to help her relax. I read books, I acted like I was doing other things like cleaning, I sang, I danced, really anything I could think of. Despite all these efforts, Ashlyn kept holding it and running to the potty every few minutes. I was actually doing dishes and Ashlyn ran past me into the bathroom and she pooped on the potty all by herself!! Again, I was shocked!! We celebrated!
Of course there will always be accidents here and there, and you use dry/wet checks and reminders for a few days/weeks after training day.
Disclaimer: A few of my friends tried this one day method and it did not work for their children, but I guess it is worth a try and worth $7.99.
All in all, Toilet Training in Less than a Day worked for two of our children!! I am a little surprised, but now I am a believer in the one day method!
(Side note: Ashlyn has been trained for over a week now. She hasn't worn any diapers. She has had less than five "half" pee accidents (just a LITTLE wet), no poo accidents, stays dry for nap and nighttime. One night she even woke up in the middle of the night to tell me she had to go potty! Yay!!)
When our second daughter, Ambria was 2.5, someone recommended the book Toilet Training in Less Than a Day by Nathan Azrin. My husband picked up the $7.99 book at Barnes and Nobles. I thought I would give it a try with Ambria. The book was a quick, easy read. Seemed easy enough. And guess what...
IT WORKED!!
So I thought, either 1. Ambria was just really ready to be potty trained, 2. we got lucky, or 3. the method in the book worked.
Ashlyn has been showing physical and mental signs of being ready to be potty trained for a few weeks. She went potty on the big potty a few times and was interested in the "new" potty chair. She is a month shy of 2.5 years old.
So, I got out the book again. I refreshed my memory about the basics of the method and we got to work.
Again, I was nervous for some reason. It was a bitter sweet moment of our last child in diapers getting ready to become a "big girl." I followed the method for the most part but Ashlyn pretty much took her own initiative and I only followed the method for the basic ideas and followed Ashlyn's lead.

You Know You're a Mom When...
The Mom Purse
*You buy a purse big enough to fit lots of snacks
*You always carry snacks in your purse
*You have more snack wrappers and used kleenex in your purse than money
*In your purse is your new phone...and the first thing you do with your new iPhone is download kid apps
I am such a mom.

Favorites
My favorite color is blue, then the girls must like blue too. My favorite food is pizza, then the girls' favorite food is probably pizza too.
Of course not, but it took me a while to realize this. Just because something is my "favorite" doesn't mean the girls have to like it---a little or AT ALL.
This is what makes each girl an individual.
Mariah likes purple, Ambria likes pink, Ashlyn likes owls.
Mariah like peanut butter and honey, Ambria likes cheeseburgers, and Ashlyn likes macaroni and cheese. Mariah loves fruit and vegetables, Ambria doesn't, and Ashlyn chews them up and spits them out.
Mariah likes wearing socks to bed, Ambria doesn't, and Ashlyn doesn't care.
Mariah likes drinking warm water, Ambria likes cold water, and Ashlyn likes juice.
Mariah likes to read, Ambria likes to draw, and Ashlyn likes to write in books.
I could go on and on, but what I love is what makes each daughter unique!

Displacing Blame
I went to the store to buy some curtain rods for our house, I had my list in my hand of the sizes and kinds of curtain rods that I needed. Checked that off the list and went home to put up the curtain rods in the basement, kitchen, and bedrooms.
I got home, and there was one less curtain rod than I needed! Ugh! I counted again and again, and yup, I was one short. Darn! Without even thinking, I blamed the girls and thought, they must have dropped one out of the cart, they put it back on the shelf, etc.
I blamed the girls first, not myself.
I wonder how often I do that, when in reality, it was MY fault. The girls had nothing to do with MY mistake.
I'm going to try to pay closer attention in whom I place my blame and try not to jump to conclusions and think that if something went wrong, it is the girls' fault. That isn't fair to the girls.
So, even though I had to go back to the store to get another curtain rod, I learned a valuable lesson.

Bad Mom Award
Hoping that I can be a better mother today than yesterday!
I felt like I kept snapping at the girls and losing my patience with them. I'm glad tomorrow is a new day!

Terrible Two's
The Terrible Two's are out in full force. All my parenting experience and skills are out the window.
One minute, Ashlyn is being absolutely adorable, the next, screaming for some absurd reason that I'm unaware of.
One minute, Ashlyn is laughing, the next, having an all out tantrum.
One minute, Ashlyn wants crackers, the next, she wants raisins. Then she decides NEITHER and then screams.
OH MY WORD!!
One minute, I am laughing with her, the next, I am almost in tears with frustration.
It is amazing how someone so small can control MY mood.

School Project
Mariah, our 3rd grader, completed her first big school project. We went out and got a big poster board and it took everything I had to not try to do the project for her. I wanted to do the project one way and she wanted to do it her own way. True, it is HER project.
I took a step back.
I coached Mariah into completing her first project by telling her to write in pencil first, then marker, spell everything correctly, write big, etc.
Well, she wrote small, spelled a word incorrectly, glued things in place where they didn't fit, used ugly colors...
I held my breath and my tongue.
This is HER project.
Other than a few tips, I allowed Mariah to do HER project, HER way.
I was proud her Mariah and her first project, and even better, Mariah was proud of herself!
One down, ALOT more to go!

Child's Play?
I'm taking a risk here, but to tell you the truth, I don't like to "play." I don't enjoy pretending with Barbies or playing house or playing school. I can do it for a few minutes but that is the extent of my "play" with those kinds of imaginative activities.
Bad mom? Maybe.
I don't mind making train tracks, creating marble runs, building forts, or playing outside. Those activities are more my style, and I can do that for hours. Maybe this is because I enjoyed such activites when I was a child. I wasn't into Barbies much or playing make believe.
I hope I'm not a bad mom, but I let the girls play "make believe" on their own time.
I don't know if I am alone here or not, or if some other moms out there feel the same way. Sometimes I feel guilty like I don't "play" enough with my girls, and a bunch of negative thoughts creep in.
I want to be a good mom, but I just am not good at playing "make believe." I'll have to make an effort to work on it, but no promises.
Ahh, motherhood. It is a journey.

First Day of School
The girls were up early, super excited, and quickly got dressed in their new clothes. They found special notes on the counter from daddy and they ate "Back To School" muffins. The two could hardly wait to get out the door. First, a few pictures....
And then the little one felt left out and wanted to get in a pic. I spy an extra pair of piggy toes...
The girls still held my hand as we walked into the school. It was a mixture of emotions for all of us.
Mariah and Ambria, I am soooo proud of you!

Back to School Shopping
A Poem of Sorts
'Tis that time of year again...
Off I go,
with three girls in tow (definitely outnumbered).
Supply lists in hand,
each girl has their own special demand.
(Pink scissors, purple folders, glitter crayons, and Ashlyn gets bored so in the cart she stands).
Youngest screams, snacks go flying,
I am audibly sighing,
and my tongue I am tying,
and if I said this was fun, I would by lying.
(Side note: Most of the time, I love shopping with the girls, I was just stressed and unfocused and Ashlyn was crabby. Ok, side note over, back to poem).
Stores were pretty busy,
parents frantic and in a tizzy.
Shopping cart full,
the experience has taken its toll (on me and the bank account).
Lists complete,
and I need to get off my feet.

Juice Box
I'm not exactly sure why, but each time the girls ask for a juice box (which is usually just on vacations or days away from the house), I open it and take a BIG drink.Well, I do know why. (Most things I do have a reason behind it).
1. I am thirsty
2. I like juice boxes
3. The less the juice in the box, the less amount that the kids can squeeze out and spill everywhere
It is so nice of the girls to share with mom. No, actually they scold me for drinking out of their juice boxes. :) Please and thank you.

Hand Me Downs
Love them. Definitely a benefit of having three girls.
I decided to be ambitious this week and go through the girls Fall and Winter clothes (yes, I know it is only July). With Back to School shopping right around the corner, I make a mental list of items the girls need and clothes they have out grown.
Well, Ambria's Back to School shopping occurred in our basement, in BIN #5 Size 5 and in BOX #2 Shoes.
Awesome.
Boom, done with one kid.
That is what I call Smart Shopping!
(I added the label "Product Reviews" to this post because I give Hand Me Downs Two Thumbs Up! Haha).

More Stories from the Grocery Store
Every time I take the three girls grocery shopping with me, I end up regretting it. This time was no different.
I got one of those HUGE shopping carts with two extra seats attached, the kind that I can hardly push and can't see over.
First is the argument of who is going to sit where.
Ashlyn immediately starts asking for a snack.
Ashlyn doesn't like the snack option.
I pull out emergency snack.
All three girls want it.
Mariah disappears.
Ashlyn wants to switch seats.
Ambria starts climbing all over the cart like a circus.
Ashlyn wants another snack.
Ashlyn doesn't like snack option and starts screaming.
I don't have any other snacks so Ashlyn keeps screaming.
People look at me because Ashlyn is screaming.
I get Ashlyn out of the cart and hold her.
I attempt to push the HUGE cart while holding Ashlyn.
I am regretting taking the kids to the grocery store.
Mariah starts pushing the cart and knocks over 105 bottles of water in the aisle!! (No joke)
I stop to pick them up as they roll everywhere.
Ashlyn wants to walk.
Ashlyn knocks a jar of pickles off the shelf (and I held my breath hoping the jar wouldn't break-it didn't, phew).
Ambria's sandals fall off at the end of the aisle. Must go back.
Ashlyn wants to grab all the tomatoes out of the bin.
Ambria wants to cool off by opening all the freezer doors.
Mariah doesn't want to push the cart anymore.
Ambria's sandals fall off again.
THEN, the forever long checkout line where the girls take just about everything off the shelf while they try to wait patiently...and I start to pull out my hair.
Shopping complete but all my hair is gone.
(I love my girls dearly, but man, is it difficult to go grocery shopping with all of them!)

Picture Taking Experience
I attempt to take each daughter to get their picture taken at yearly milestones (3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 1 year, 18 months, 2 years, 3 years, etc). Even though I photograph the girls often, I still like to take them to a studio, pay $8 and get a package of pictures that I can send out to family members.
Seems easy enough.
Yeah right.
Picture day nightmares.
Mariah and Ambria were pretty easy. Ashlyn, not so much.
Even when Ashlyn was a few months old, she hated the studio. I'm not sure if it was the strange photographer, the small room, lights, or what, but it was never a pretty scene. On most occasions, the photographer was able to get less than FIVE shots of Ashlyn.
Yesterday was no different. Ashlyn will be turning TWO this month (oh my!!) so I had a spur of the moment idea to get her pictures taken when we were at the mall. I packed an extra outfit, a comb for her hair, a sucker for bribing.
Ashlyn was skeptical the moment we walked into the studio. She wouldn't stand or sit on the X and then she started to run away, cry, and resist.
Ugh.
I was stressed. Ashlyn wasn't happy. The photographer got TWO shots, one of Ashlyn starting to run away, and the other of Ashlyn looking scared. Nice.
Well, that didn't work.

A Free Flow of Emotions
Not sure what started it, but...
I was watching an episode of Full House with the girls a few weeks ago, the episode when Danny proposes to Vicki at Disney. I got all teary eyed. (Go ahead, you can laugh at me, I did).
And then add this...
and all the emotions that accompany a major surgery. I keep getting teary eyed when I think of what Ashlyn went through and then I get teary again when I go re-read all the encouraging facebook messages.
And then I start missing my family in Michigan even more...
And then randomly, I get all emotional again when he started crying...
And then another milestone as Ambria finished preschool, yup, tears again...
Oh dear me. Some legit teariness, and some not.

Mother's Day Gifts
Each of the girls gave me a special gift for Mother's Day:
Ambria (5 years old) decorated a plate for me at preschool and made me a card with a rainbow on it. So darn cute.
Ashlyn (22 months old) inadvertently tie dyed my shirt by spilling juice on it, and then added to her gift by filling her diaper.
Mariah (8 years old) wrote me a poem:
You're kind, you're sweet
like my heartbeat. Cotton candy in my
mouth. chocolate ice cream melting all around.
at night, at play you're there every
day. No one can take my mom away.
Love you girls! Thank you for making this a wonderful Mother's Day!! I am blessed!

Not My Favorite Morning
A few mornings ago, I was sleeping peacefully in my warm, comfy bed, and I was awakened by the two older girls at an "they should NOT be up this early" hour of the morning. I thought I was dreaming as I heard them starting to argue. I thought their voices were intertwined in my dream. Nope.
Ambria was crying/screaming.
I stumbled out of bed at the "they should NOT be up this early" hour. I wasn't too happy. I tried to quickly quiet Ambria because I knew she would wake up Ashlyn with her out of control screaming. It was WAY too early for Ashlyn to wake up.
Ashlyn woke up crying due to the unnecessary noise. OH MY GOSH.
Now I was really not happy.
Three girls (four, including me) up too early and crabby.
So, what were to two older girls arguing about? Ambria wanted to sit where Mariah was sitting and Mariah wouldn't move. OH MY GOSH!
